Lines Of Silence – Lines in Opposition

Lines Of Silence are a Todmorden-based duo: David Little and Andrea Parra, who handles vocals and multi-instrumental duties. “Lines in Opposition” is the lead track from Harmonise, their second EP for Sprechen, out April 29th. Written by Little and Parra, produced by Little and Dave Clarkson.

The track is the first Lines Of Silence recording to feature vocals, and Parra’s presence changes the weight of it considerably. Motorik drums and percussion keep the structure tight while synths move around layered guitars underneath. The title nods in two directions at once: opposition to the far right, and a reference to the Rock in Opposition movement (Henry Cow, Faust). “A cry of anger against the grifters, wannabe authoritarians and grievance mongers that try to divide us, and a call for unity and transcendence”, the band say. The politics sit inside the music rather than being announced over it, which is the right call.

Harmonise rounds out with two remixes. Coventry ambient producer Stone Anthem takes album track “Kinetik” and builds it into a slow-accumulating drone landscape. Psychederek strips “Lines in Opposition” back and moves it danceward, putting Parra’s vocals front and centre with stabby synths and buzzing leads. A full Lines Of Silence album is forthcoming on Sprechen. I find myself most interested in where Parra’s voice takes the project next: “Lines in Opposition” suggests there’s a lot of ground still to cover.

Harmonise EP is out now on Sprechen.
